Hi everyone. It's been quiet around here, I hope everyone is still staying caught up on the reading. I'm going to be helping out and posting the prompts and the chapter assignments.
This week we are in Helaman. We'll be covering Chapters 1-5.
For tomorrow's discussion read Helaman 1 & 2.
In chapter 1 there is a lot of contention for the judgment seat. How does it parallel what we've seen occur in our time? How does contention affect people in this way? How did it contribute to the eventual downfall of the Nephite nation? How did contention help their enemies defeat them?(v.18-20) What parallels do you see in our own lives? What good came of this? For who?
Other points to consider; What were the objectives of the secret combinations? (2:8) Consider Mormon's comments on the effects the secret combinations had upon the Nephite civilization (12-14).
How can contentions enter a home, ward, neighborhood, family or any group? How can we avoid them?
What are some other observations you had while reading these verses?

While I read these chapters I was disheartened that these were my chapters to teach Gospel Doctrine on, I'm hoping it gets better by the end of Chapter 5.
I hate reading about secret combinations because it makes you think how just a few people can cause such unrest and pain for others - kind of like terrorists.
I also was upset by the power play between brothers - the sons of Pahoran. I hope I can create love between siblings in my home.
I hope you guys have more to share with me because I like taking some of our discussion here into the classroom.
I'll agree Janelle, depressing! A little unresolved contention has the ability to destroy nations.
I think that on a smaller scale that contention is like the wedge parable. If we allow a little, Satan has the ability to make it grow into a large untameable monster that eats us all.
I copied the questions from my college study guide for these chapters, I think that the good that comes from reading this is the clear cut ability to see the damage of contention, secrecy and hunger for power and prestige. And then avoid it all completely!
The Nephite civilization was destroyed (12-14). I wouldn't doubt it could destroy friendships and families too.
I think we are constantly reminded that our good works glorify our Father in Heaven. If we focus on giving glory to him, rather than receiving status among men, we can start on a positive foot. And move in the opposite direction of the evils of power seeking.
